QUARANTINE FUCKERY

APRIL 2020

There is no central theme to this series (hence the word, “fuckery” in the title). However “Quarantine” refers to the two months I spent alone in my apartment during the first outbreak of Covid-19. In this series, I visualize the anxiety induced by the pandemic and past experiences.

Moreover, I lost myself in the wander of my imagination: topics explored include shoes, sunlight, a phallic lamp, and perspectives.

I thought I was frustrated with quarantine. Perhaps. But like any other issue, there’s deeper strife taking place. Probably the insecurities of the unknown and inability, chained to, and by the external. How fucking annoying….

Fortunately, there’s therapy. It’s like a time machine: looking to the past to understand the present. Fingers crossed I change my future, which is tantalizingly bright. Why am I mesmerized by something so clear and simple? Probably because the path towards it is so fucking complex. But down to my core, I know that liberation will be so damn beautiful

Artificial Sunlight

While engrossed with work, I looked out of my bedroom window to realize that nightfall had arrived. Turning on my lamp, I realized the duality of the moment... However, wide awake, we do not live in a duality: our lives are centered around light. We need it for professional work; to find escape in a digital world; to communicate with loved ones; to arise from our nightly slumbers. The list goes on. But most of all, we need light to sustain a hopeful outlook.

I glanced at my Doc Martins and realized how much I appreciate them. Perhaps a desire to return to a time when I can flaunt an outfit with these shoes.

But my mind drifted to another thought: shoes are taken for granted. Quarantine has restricted our movements, but we can still wear shoes indoors and outdoors. A constant from the old reality existing in the new.

Perhaps shoes represent a sense of normalcy.

A specific mindset can change how one is viewed by others. Positivity attracts positive experiences, while negativity attracts negative moments. But a neutral, curious mindset is the most optimal. The resulting experiences will lead you to prolific self-discoveries, the ultimate goal.

But isn’t one outlook equal to the other? The image is nevertheless impactful, right?
